Gorge Toadlet

Pseudophryne douglasi

A small (to 3 cm) yet elongate frog with short legs and a coarse granular skin. Brown or black with bright patches of orange on the snout, behind the eyes, rump and fore/hind limbs. Belly white, usually with irregular black markings.

Breeding

In response to episodic rain events. Known to lay eggs directly in water or under rocks near streams or waterholes.

Call

Grating squelch.

Eggs

The only member of the genus reported to lay eggs directly in to the water (other Pseudophryne lay eggs in a terrestrial nest). Eggs also found under rocks by waterholes.

Tadpoles

Unknown.

Other Notes

This rare species has an ancient relictual arid distribution quite separate from other toadlets.
