Spotted-thighed Frog

Litoria cyclorhyncha

A close relative of the motorbike frog but more spectacularly coloured and occurs further south and east. A large frog with unwebbed fingers containing prominent discs. Closely related to the motorbike frog but more brilliantly coloured. The back is dark green to brown, dappled with gold or bronze patches. The distinctive characteristics are the groin and thigh that bear pale-yellow patches (absent in motorbike frogs). Maximum size is about 8 cm.

Breeding

Males call from late spring and in summer around the edges of pools.

Call

Very similar to that of the motorbike frog.

Eggs

Presumably similar to the motorbike frog.

Tadpoles

Presumably similar to the motorbike frog.

Other Notes

This species may indeed be a subspecies to the Motorbike Frog, rather than a full species.

Distribution

South-east WA from east of Albany to Hopetoun and inland to Broomehill and Ravensthorpe. Also Wagin and southeast wheatbelt.

Habitat

Near swamps and permanent water, frequently seen around well-watered gardens and farms.
